Anatomy of an Automated Testing Framework by Steve Miller

July 2, 2009

Why Automate Your Test Cases?
Many companies run their regression test cases manually, so when does it make sense to begin automating your regression test cases? It makes sense to automate your test cases when you can no longer run the regression test cases on each build created. For example, if you are doing daily or weekly builds of your code to quality assurance and you cannot quickly run your regression test cases with each build, it is time to consider automating them.  Automating your test cases provide these benefits:

  • Quicker Releases – By having your regression test cases run automatically, your software quality team can concentrate on testing new features of your software and less time regressing existing features.
  • Higher quality releases – Your software releases will have fewer bugs and require less customer support because they will be of higher quality.
  • Happier Customers – Your customers will be happier and more willing to serve as testimonials for future prospects.

What is an Automated Testing Framework?
Most automated tools require the test engineer to understand a scripting language (VB Script, Java Script, etc.) to write their automated test cases.  These tools usually have the ability to create the scripts...

QTP (QuickTestPro) vs TestComplete

June 2, 2009

At STAR, we've been working with many automated tools over the last decade to include WinRunner, QTP, LoadRunner, Rational Robot, TestPartner, Silk and open source tools. From my personal experience, many companies that buy automation tools for automating there QA processes will stop using them as soon as they lose key personnel or they hit a major road block with their product. The question is, why is there no standard test automation tool, something like "silver bullet" to solve our testing problems and bring happiness to the Quality Assurance world? Why do so many companies believe that test automation implementation will cost a fortune or they go with open source and eventually stop using the tool base on the lack of professional support? Well, we know that the customer would like go with most popular and widely used automation tool to be able to obtain or retain more talent in organization, not losing their ROI. Looks like QTP from HP is "the most widely used" tool in the market, they holding the biggest share in the area of automated tools. However, many test automation issues remain un-solved.  Again, people have been sold on record and playback features with next... [More]
